My Approach to Music Education
Why I Teach
I am Kaitlin Isaac, a flutist and music educator committed to cultivating confident, curious, and collaborative young musicians. My own journey began when I first picked up the flute in fourth grade, and ever since I have witnessed how a supportive music program can transform students' self‑belief and sense of belonging. Whether I am guiding beginners through their first notes or preparing advanced students for honor‑band auditions, my goal is to help every learner discover and share their unique musical voice.
My Teaching Philosophy
Guiding Value | What it looks like in my classroom |
---|---|
Student-Centered & Inclusive | Flexible lesson plans that adapt to diverse skill levels, identities, and instrumentation. |
Data-Informed Growth | I design assessments that inform next-week's rehearsal, turning feedback into clear, actionable goals for each musician. |
Collaborative Community | In my substitute and long‑term coverage roles I partner with the regular classroom teacher to maintain ensemble momentum, encourage peer mentorship, and connect students with the wider music community. |
Creative Expression | Technique is the launchpad, not the finish line. We improvise, compose, and program music that resonates with students' cultures and curiosities. |
Lifelong Musicianship | By modeling professional rehearsal etiquette and a growth-mindset, I show students that the joy of music doesn't end after the final bell. |

Instrument Exploration and Selection
A self-paced digital slideshow used to introduce sixth-grade students to their instrument options at the beginning of the school year. As students navigated the presentation independently, they discovered key details about instrument types, sound characteristics, playing techniques, and expectations, facilitating informed instrument selection while small groups completed mouthpiece testing.

8th Grade Self-Lead Rehearsal
A structured, student-led rehearsal designed for eighth-grade band students to independently manage their musical progress during teacher absence. Utilizing a detailed worksheet and clearly defined roles, students collaborated to rehearse selected sections of their repertoire, provided peer feedback, and documented their progress.
